TENERIFE

Tenerife is the largest and most populous island of the seven Canary Islands; it is also the most populated island of Spain, with a land area of 2,034.38 square kilometres and 898.680 inhabitants, 43% of the total population of the Canary Islands. Tenerife is also the largest and most populous island of Macaronesia. About five million tourists visit Tenerife each year, the most of any Canary Islands. Tenerife hosts one of the world's largest carnivals and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is attempting to become a World Heritage Site. Tenerife is serviced by two airports, Tenerife North Airport and Tenerife South Airport, and is the tourism and economic centre of the archipelago. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and the seat of the island council (cabildo insular). The city is capital of the autonomous community of Canary Islands (shared with Las Palmas), sharing governmental institutions such as Presidency and ministries. Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands, until a decree ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains at present. The island is home to the University of La Laguna, which was founded in 1792 and is the oldest university in the Canaries. San Cristóbal de La Laguna (a World Heritage Site) is the second city of the island and the third one of the archipelago. The city of La Laguna was also capital of the Canary Islands until Santa Cruz replaced it in 1833.

MAURITIUS

Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2000 km off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country includes the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues (560 km east of the principal island), the islands of Agalega and the archipelago Saint Brandon. Mauritius claims sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago situated 1287 km to the north east; the United Kingdom excised the archipelago from Mauritian territory prior to Mauritius' independence and gradually depopulated it. The islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues and Réunion, 170 km south west, form part of the Mascarene Islands. The area of the country is 2040 km2. Its capital is Port Louis. The first Portuguese explorers found no indigenous people living on the island in 1507. The Dutch settled on the island in 1638 and abandoned it in 1710. Five years later, the island became a French colony and was renamed Isle de France. The British took control of Mauritius in 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars. The country remained under British rule until it became an independent Commonwealth realm on 12 March 1968 and a republic within the Commonwealth on 12 March 1992. The country is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural; most Mauritians are multilingual, and English, French, Creole and Asian languages are used. The government system is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system. Mauritius is highly ranked for democracy and for economic and political freedom. The island of Mauritius was the only home of the Dodo bird. The bird became extinct fewer than eighty years after its discovery.

MO'OREA

Mo'orea is a high island in French Polynesia, one of the Windward Islands, part of the Society Islands, 17 km northwest of Tahiti. The true spelling of Mo'orea is Mo'ore'a, which means "yellow lizard" in Tahitian: Mo'o = lizard ; Re'a = Yellow. . An older name for the island is 'Aimeho, sometimes spelled 'Aimeo or 'Eimeo (among other spellings misunderstood by early visitors with no knowledge of the language). Early Western colonists and voyagers also referred to Mo'orea as York Island.
